The Republic square (Trg Republike) is Belgrade’s central square and main gathering point for the locals and visitors alike. It features the National Theatre, National Museum, the Army House, the monument to Knez (prince) Mihailo, several minor cultural institutions and numerous cafes.
It is actually a large space divided in three smaller areas. The two main gather points on the square are the monument to Knez Mihailo, often referred to as “Kod konja (by the Horse)” and the digital clock nearby.
There are 4 fountains located on the square, the 2 most popular are in front of Belgrade Cultural Center (KCB).
Numerous fast food and pizza stands surround the square.
Getting here
The square is easily accessed walking through various streets: Knez Mihailova, Obilićev Venac, Vasina, Čika Ljubina, Francuska, Skadarlija, Bulevar Despota Stefana, Makedonska and Kolarčeva.
You can get here from anywhere in the downtown area on foot, or by any trolley line as well as bus lines 24, 26, 27, 35, 37, 43, 96. Three other important hubs are nearby covering almost all of the lines that pass through the city center: Students’ square, Zeleni Venac market, Dom Omladine.
